Surrey Slingshot Association – FIRST MEETING

A new British catapult club has been opened, called the Surrey Slingshot Association. The opening meeting was held at the Mychett Community Centre, in deepest Surrey, last Thursday, 3rd of May and shall be, of a Thursday night from now on. This, adapted from their mission statement:

“The Surrey Slingshot Association is a non-profit organisation set up to enable sportsmen and women to develop and train their skills for the progression of our sport, to meet in a safe environment in a proper venue.  The venue – with temporary addition of a few safety procedures, will create a facility where our members can practice and train. This will create one of the UK’s first dedicated, club-environment venues in the country, which I feel can only be a good thing for the growth and development of our sport in the UK. It would be highly beneficial to some of our members who compete throughout the UK and especially for some who are travelling to Italy for the Slingshot World Cup tournament in July. We are way behind as a nation, for the provision of slingshot clubs and this is us doing something about it!”

Since it was so warm, the target array was set up outside, but shall be indoors tomorrow and in future, although there may be whole day events in future. Not very many folks came but it was a quality shoot with a wide choice of cool reactive targets, from flapping HDPE discs, to steel spinners and colourful disc spinners from WASP Slingshots. Reece Sayers, major force in ammo supply, who works dead ‘ard to get his stuff sent out double-quick and always flings in freebies, supported the event with a box of steels to add to the WASP practice ammo they were also sent. The top bods at ProShot Catapults in Sheffield are also supporting the club’s efforts, so a massive thanks to the industry stalwarts who have gotten behind this so well. I also gather that a bunch of smaller-hand frames are on the way from Gamekeeper John by way of support. Looks like that family man is thinking of the kids and women… bless!

The catapult toffs Mick Wick and his lady Nina were there and Nina also brought a mass of food…I was so vexed that I had eaten..but still found room for some of her legendary carrot cake!

All in all, for a tenner to join and shoot for an evening, with all that cool target stuff and folks to shoot with, this is a must if you are nearby. Your shooting ALWAYS improves when you share an oche with those better than you..and except for Slingshot Stig, that means most always.

Slingshot World wishes the SSA all the success in the world and shall be reporting upon them in future as well….

To find the SSA, join a few slingshot groups on Facebook, or keep an eye out here. This is the latest post about the club at 5/9/18
