Federation has spread like a global firestorm! I watched a television programme about the meteor that hit the earth and killed all the dinosaurs. In relative size terms, it was like a grain of sand hitting a bowling ball. However, the massive dust plume that rose into the atmosphere, like a huge zit of lava, caused incredible changes to our planet until the dust literally settled.
I had to wait for a week or so for the dust to settle, in order to report on the situation in catapultry in the British Isles. The World Cup in Italy was a revelation. Marco Brunetti shall go down in history, with Henry Kissinger and Kofi Annan as ultimate ambassadors. As it was he that got 22 countries in one place to shoot for the World Cup.
Since this was the very first event of its kind, all you had to do was show up and sign up. Brazil was represented by just one man. Asa Wilson even joined in with the Irish team so that they could present the required quartet of shooters. When they all came back, they were full of of a new zeal for new, better ways to run things. They had seen it with their own eyes.
So why on earth did we have two associations? UKCA & BCA? Ultimately it came down to a few personalities, as to why there were two associations in the UK. But be honest, unless you are one of the original hard-core reading this, you might have wondered why on earth there were two anyway?
It was decided after some debate to blend both associations and name it for the nation. Just like the six nations rugby, where France and Italy, join with England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. We have the England Slingshot Federation.
Thing is, the BCA fans and UKCA fans were not all OK with it, and some even got perplexed and upset. But in short order, we saw a general belief in the simplicity behind it and how each nation simply needed to have its own ‘Federation’.
It doesn’t stop any club from being themselves and having their own unique identity, it just gives them an umbrella to hold, internationally. So we have The Clan in Scotland, the Welsh Warriors and the Irish have their ICA serving perfect purpose already.
